Clergy of all faiths engage in teaching. Here a rabbi meets with students getting ready for their Bar Mitzvah and Bat Mitzvah ceremonies.

Benefits and Drawbacks

A minister’s work is highly rewarding. Clergypeople have the satisfaction of seeing people grow in their faith. She helps people to serve and strengthen their communities. A minister’s work is varied. One day a minister may be presiding over a wedding. The next she might work with a youth group, helping them to strengthen their faith. On the down side, a minister may feel pressure to be perfect. Of course, ministers are people, too, and people are far from perfect. Ministers must please the many different people in their congregation, as well as follow their own calling. This balancing act can be a challenge.

Most clergy jobs do not pay terribly well, though some include housing and a car allowance. Some ministers can find only part-time work. However, a minister’s work is never done. When a member of the congregation needs support, a minister feels compelled to help.
